Waitangi Day

Why do we celebrate Waitangi Day?

We celebrate Waitangi Day because that was when the signing of the treaty was. The treaty was signed on February the 6th 1840. The people that signed the Treaty on behalf of the English was James Busby and William Hobson. The people that signed on behalf of the Maori were the Maori chiefs.

Waitangi is a day when children, adults and everyone else gets a day off work and school. Over 500 hundred Maori chiefs signed the treaty which is considered to be the New Zealand founding Document. Waitangi has been a public holiday since 1974.

On Waitangi Day celebrations are held each year around the South Island .
